Authorized Training Program
MBS, Inc. is an Authorized
Training Center for MapInfo Corporation. Our MapInfo Certified Instructor
conducts Introductory, Intermediate and Advanced MapInfo Professional training classes
twice monthly. This schedule may vary due to holidays or other events.
Classes are open to the public.

Classes can be held at our training
center in Nashville / Franklin or at your own location. In both cases, classes can
be customized to meet your needs.

Introduction
to MapInfo Professional v7.0
Two Day Course - $795.00

Important: A
thorough knowledge of graphical interfaces (Windows 95, Windows 3.1x, Windows NT or
PowerMac) is a pre-requisite.
Introduction to
MapInfo Professional v7.0 Class Overview
Unleash the power of
MapInfo. This course has been designed to help you learn how to:
- Utilize MapInfo's interface to open
data files and visualize data.
- Understand and use MapInfo's map
layering system.
- Use MapInfo to annotate your map and
create thematic maps.
- Geocode and plot database information.
- Perform analytic querying and
geographic searching of maps and data.
- Use the layout window and MapInfo's OLE
capability to create output.
- Create graphics and HTML Image maps as
electronic output.
- Manipulate maps and data using MapInfo
tools and utilities.
Introduction to
MapInfo Professional Course Outline
- Lesson 1. Displaying Your Data
Open MapInfo tables, view data in a Map, Browse, and Graph window. Create and save a
subset of data. Working with workspaces.
- Lesson 2. Developing Map Window
Skills
Change a Map window's Zoom level using the Grabber, Zoom In, and Zoom Out buttons and menu
commands. Set Map window options. View a single table in multiple Map windows.
- Lesson 3. Mapping in Layers
Use Map > Layer Control. Add and remove layers from a Map window, reorder layers, set
display options, use the Info button, and clone a Map window.
- Lesson 4. Labeling
Interactive labeling, label settings, edit and save labels, add your own annotation. Save
the Cosmetic Layer. HotLink objects with the HotLinking tool to launch URLs or files.
- Lesson 5. Selecting I
Use the Select, Marquee Select, Radius Select, and Boundary Select, Invert and Unselect
All buttons. Use Query > Select. Explore various ways of saving selections and queries,
including query tables and templates.
- Lesson 6. Opening Data Files in
MapInfo
Understand MapInfo tables. Open a Dbase file, spreadsheet, delimited ASCII file, and an MS
Access table. Create a read/write version of a read-only table.
- Lesson 7. Create Points
Learn about projections and coordinate systems. Assign point locations using Create Points
using Longitude and Latitude coordinates. Make a table unmappable. Create custom symbols.
- Lesson 8. Find
Use the Find command, respecify a search, find an intersection, find a customer. Index a
column.
- Lesson 9. Geocoding
Assigning point locations using the Geocode command. Geocode to street address and 5-digit
ZIPCodes. Select records that failed to geocode. Discuss the use of result codes,
increasing your hit rate, insets and outsets.
- Lesson 10. Thematic Mapping I
Shade points and boundaries. Shade a table data from a separate table, edit a legend,
understand thematic layers. Add a new tool to MapInfo Professional using the Tool Manager.
Discuss the many different tools available. Embed a thematic legend into the map.
- Lesson 11. Using the Layout
Window
Use the Layout window to create output. Work with frames. Create a cartographic legend.
Specify output and printer settings. Add a Scale bar.
- Lesson 12. Electronic Output
Create a clip region. Use the Clipboard to paste a map into other applications. Create
graphic images of maps. Drop as a linked object into other OLE compliant software. Create
an HTML Image map from a MapInfo table. Return to Class List

Professional Course Overview
Dig deeper into the
functionality of MapInfo Professional! This course is designed to enable you to utilize
more of the complex features available to you in MapInfo Professional. New courseware has
been created to include additional modules to take back to your workplace.

- Creating more complex thematic maps
using expressions, shading techniques, joins, pie charts and graduated symbols
- Analyzing your data using more complex
SQL, buffering and redistricting
- Registering raster images and using
raster translucency

Professional Course Outline
- Lesson 1. Thematic Mapping II
Create Pie Chart Maps, proper use of Dot Density maps, shading on an expression. Shading
one table with values from another table (joining). Effective color choice; dealing with
zero values and other advice on creating cartographically sound thematic maps.
- Lesson 2. Selecting II
Explanation of SQL. How to filter data, derive and format information. Aggregate,
summarize, and sort information. Joining tables including performing a geographic join.
Saving queries.
- Lesson 3. The Update Column
Command
Methods for "cleaning" a database. String parsing and functions, extracting
characters from a column, updating a portion of a table (search and replace). Updating one
table with information from another (performing a one column outer join). Extracting and
populating a table with geographic coordinates.
- Lesson 4. Buffering
Buffer around point and line objects. Search for objects within the buffer using the
Boundary Select button and save results. Create a Convex Hull around a group of points.
- Lesson 5. Creating Map Objects
Create a new map from scratch along with new associated tabular data; draw new objects,
join objects to create multi-point or collection objects, snap to nodes and autotrace. Use
the Drawing Button pad.
- Lesson 6. Registering Raster
Images
Register a raster image in MapInfo. Set control points, adjust display settings, the
limitations of raster images, and display an unregistered image (i.e. company logo). Use
Translucent raster image handling with thematic maps.
- Lesson 7. Redistricting
Understand Redistricting and the Districts Browser. Assign map objects to a district.
Modify a table's structure. Return to Class List

Professional course rounds out your skill set to help you become a highly proficient
"MapInfo Professional."
Advanced MapInfo
Professional Course Covers:
- Advanced thematic mapping techniques,
creating grid thematics and 3D mapping.
- Analysis using complex SQL queries and
functions.
- Editing workspaces, using the MapBasic
window and manipulating the MapInfo interface.
- Editing map objects and finding spatial
data problems.
- Connecting and using a map in a remote
database through ODBC.
- Importing and exporting map files.
Advanced MapInfo
Professional Course Outline
- Lesson 1. Thematic Mapping III
Create Bivariate thematic maps (for example a map where the color of the symbol represents
one variable and the shape of the symbol another variable). Create inflection point maps
(using two sets of colors in a map at once to represent a dividing point in your data).
Shade regions twice using "see through" patterns. Use thematic templates. Create
grid thematics with relief shading. Create 3D Prism Maps, 3D Maps, Stereographic view and
learn to change 3D options and viewpoint control.
- Lesson 2. Selecting III
Geographic querying, (using geographic operators and functions). Calculate the length of
streets, calculate distances, and determine which object a point is closest to, create
circles and use other MapBasic functions in SQL. Use Sub-selects.
- Lesson 3. MapBasic Tricks for
MapInfo
Use the MapBasic window to record and execute MapBasic commands. Alter MapInfo's standard
interface (menu items, ButtonPads) using the MapInfow.mnu file. Edit workspaces.
- Lesson 4. Editing Map Objects
Use the Snap feature, reshape map objects. Combine objects together, erase portions of an
object, and split an object into two or more pieces. Pack a table. Finding Spatial Data
Problems. Correct problems using Check Regions, Objects > Enclose and Objects >
Convert to Polyline. Detect gaps, self-intersections, snap nodes, think/generalize,
disaggregating. Pushpin records on to a map (manual geocoding).
- Lesson 5. ODBC Basic with
MapInfo Professional
Install ODBC support and drivers. Download an ODBC table, create a MapInfo Map Catalog.
Make an ODBC table mappable. Save changes to a remote table.
- Lesson 6. Importing Map Files
Use the MapInfo Universal Translator to import and export the various different types of
map files in the industry: AutoCAD, ESRI Shape, and Intergraph/Microstation Design files.
Create a MapInfo Interchange file. Use MapInfo's Table > Import command to import a
Drawing Export Format (.DXF) file from a CAD package.

MapInfo Professional Class Schedule
Traditionally, MBS's
MapInfo Professional Training Classes are run from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM each scheduled day.
Our list of pre-scheduled classes are shown below and follow the outlines above.
Classes can be taken in full blocks from Introduction to Advanced or in smaller
groups such as the Introduction course one month and Intermediate and Advanced the
following month. To register for a class, please contact us at MBS. We can be

Custom classes with
client selected sessions from the outlines above or with different dates, times and
locations can also be developed for our students. As with traditional classes,
students receive a MapInfo Professional Training Guide designed to match their class
structure and contents. To discuss a custom training class or training at your
location, please contact MBS directly so that we might work with you to meet your specific
training needs.

There will be a short break in MBS's schedule of MapInfo Training Classes
from March through June of 2003. Classes are expected to resume with our current
line up and trainer in July 2003.

MapInfo Professional Class
Registration can be conducted through MBS, Inc. directly or through MapInfo Corporation.

MBS is located in Franklin, TN.
We are approximately 20 minutes south of downtown Nashville and 25 minutes from the
Nashville International Airport. Nashville is located centrally in the mid south
region and is 3 hours from Knoxville, Memphis, Chattanooga, Louisville and
Birmingham. We also are only four hours from Atlanta and Cincinnati.
